Head Start Program A Head Start program for 240 children in the counties of Chowan, Gates, Hyde Pasquotank, Perquimans, and t Washington, sponsored by the , Economic Improvement ' Council, Inc., has been funded by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare W.G. Pierce, Deputy Director, ays the total Federal Funds for the project are $288,525.00. Two of the seven counties - Dare and Pasquotank - will operate on a 12 month basis und the other five on a 9-1 2 month baste. There will be two new positions added to the Head Start Program, a nurse, R.N., to head up the Medical and Dental phase, and a nutritionist, who will work with the cooks and serve as trainer for parent groups in nutrition Parents interested in sending their child to Head Start in September should fill out an application form which can be secured at the Economic Resource Center in each county or Mrs. Margaret Holmes, Project Diretor. Spivey by Perquimans County Board of Com missioners for services rendered Perquimans County as a member for eighteen years, chairman for twelve years, of Perquimans County Board of Commissioners, December t970. -. -v 946 Needy People In Perquimans On USDA Food Program ATLANTA, Ga. - There were 946 low-income Perquimans County people on the U.S Department of Agriculture's (commodity distribution) program in April as compared to 1,037 in March, Russell H. James, Southeast regional director of USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, reports. At the same time, he said the Jptal nunjbejr in North Carolina jn uie 1 00a program taecreaseu 3,524 in April. There were 323,837 in March. At the same time, he said the total number in North Carolina on the food program decreased 5,524 in APRIL. There were 323,313 receiving aid in April as compared to 328,837 in March. The number on the food stamp program in Nortn Carolina declined 1,722 in March. A total of 187,925 were issued more than $4.5 million in food coupons of which $3.1 million was in bonus stamps. The major decrease, however, was in the direct distribution of USDA-donated foods programs now operating in 50 counties. Here there were 135,388 - down 3,802. . ; James said that his records show that each person on this program received about 37 pounds of highly nutritious food valued at around $16. Among the 24 items distributed in April were: dry beans, butter, cheese, egg mix, peanut butter, canned poultry, dry milk, flour, syrup, corn meal and canned meal. , Over the region, James said,the number of USDA food programs wasstable. Hekman estimated that Teuifnans Schools Officially Open 1971-72 Term Sept 1st Perquimans County Schools Superintendent CC Walters released the following schedule for the schools in Perquimans County for the 1971-72 term. ECU Concludes NSF Science Institute For Primary Teachers Twenty-four primary school science teachers are concluding a three-week summer institute on July 2 at East Carolina University. The institute is sponsored by ; the National Science Foundation and directed by Dr. Floyd Mattheis of the Science Education department. The institute, according to Dr. Mattheis, was designed to "provide teachers with com petence and understandings which they could not other wise acquire. "A new understanding of science, a wider range of behavior patterns, specific plans to implement teaching, a knowledge of the materials needed to implement them, and the assurance of support from the school system" are some of the results anticipated by the teachers, says Dr. Mattheis. Each school' which has a teacher participating in the program has expressed con fidence in the program and has agreed to cooperate in the procurement of the necessary instructional supplies to aid the teacher in effectively carrying through with the program begun in this institue. Of this number 10.6 million were on the food stamp program, being issued almost $140 million in free bonus stamps. A year ago, it was noted, only 5.6 million were on this program, being issued $80.3 million to bonus stamps. On August 30 the summer holiday ends for the teachers in the school system with their first days work beginning the new school term. August 31 is student orien tation day. September 1 begins the 180 day school term. First holiday of the new school year is September 6, Labor Day Holiday . November 25 and 26 is tagged for Thanksgiving Holiday. December 17 the Christmas holidays begin at the close of the school day. January 3rd ends the Christmas holiday with school getting back into full swing. January 24th is Teacher Work Day. March 31, thru April 13 is Easter Holiday. However, the holiday will be used for make up days if needed. The 1971-72 School Term will end with the closing of the schools on May 31. Extended Work Days for Teachers is June 1st and 2nd. Strickland Cited For Outstanding Work Ed Strickland, Manager of Atlantic Credit Company, 108 South . McMorrine Street, Elizabeth City, N.C, has received a Certificate of Recognition for outstanding work in the field of public relations. This award is presented each year to those deserving members by the North Carolina Consumer Finance Association, whose main purpose is to improve and encourage the business of financing individuals and families for necessary and useful! purposes at reasonable charges. Another purpose of the association is: To engage in a program of public relations for the benefit of the public and or the members of the association. Points are earned in many ways, but. mainly by personal participation in promoting the wise use of credit in high schools or other educational groups and community service. Tom Byrum Dies At 76 Tom Byrum. 76. of 601 W. rubb Street, bertford. died Sunday at 11:45 in the Chowan Hospital. Edenton. N.C. A native of Chowan County he was a son of the late Jessie and Mrs. Jane Dail Byrum and the husband of Mrs. Belle Dail Byrum. He was a car salesman for Hoke Motor Company of Edenton and attended Center Hill Baptist Church. Surviving bsides his wife are four sons. Tommy P. Byrum of Hertford. Hercules Byrum of Gates. N.C. Britton Byrum of Norfolk. Va.. and Paul Byrum of Newport News. Va.: three daughters. Mrs. Viola Goodwin and Mrs. Annie Belle Byrum of Tyner. and Mrs. Irene Broughton of Hertford; one sister Mrs. Rosie Boyce of Tyner ; two brothers, J .R. Byrum of Tyner and Cecil Byrum of Hertford: 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A funeral service was held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Center Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. M.B. Motts and Rev. NORMAN Harris. "The Old Rugged Cross" was sung by the Center Hill Church Choir and "How Great Thou Art" was sung by Rev. Norman Harris. They were accompanied by J.C. Boyce, Jr., organist. The casket pall was made of red roses, white chrysan themums, baby's breath and fern. Pallbearers were Leon Byrum, King George Byrum, David Boyce, Jerdia Byrum, Weldon Byrum, and Bertram Byrum. Burial was in the Family Cemtery. Rites Held For George Powell George Thomas Powell, 87, of 400 N. Church Street, Hertford, died Thursday morning at 3:30 in the Craven County Hospitalin New Bern following a long illness. A native of Chowan County, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Mrs. Mary Bunch Powell. He was a member of the Hert ford Baptist Church. Before his retirement he was a farmer and operated a barber shop and pool room. Surviving are a son, Julian C. Powell and a daughter, Mrs. Martin Towe of Hertford and two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Graveside services were held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery by the Rev. Normal Harris, pastor of the Hertford Baptist Church. "The Old Rueaed Cross" was sung by the Men's Choir of the Hertford Baptist Church. Bozman. LA, Proctor Dies In Veteran's Hospital L.A. Proctor of Rt. 1, Hertford died Sunday at the Veterans Hospital in Hampton, Va. He was a native of Perquimans County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Proctor, of Route 1, Hertford; a son, Thomas A. Proctor of Rt. 1, Hertford; a daughter Elizabeth Proctor Saunders, of Davidsonville, Maryland; eight grand children and one brother Will Proctor of Great Bridge, Va. A graveside service was held Tuesday at 3:00 P.M. in Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton by the Rev. Gorgon Shaw, pastor of Benthel Bapstist Church. "Beyond The Sunset" was sung by the Bethel Church choir. They were accompanied by Miss Linda Evans, organist. The casket was draped with the American Flag. He was a member of the America .. . Legion. Charles Skinner, Jr., folded the flag and presented it to the widow, Mrs. Pearl proctor. Pallbearers were Earl Proctor, Albert E. Sheppard, Jr., Lloyd Evans, E.J.. Proctor, Jr., Willis Proctor and Wallace Hobos. Grandson Of Harrells In Business Competition Charles M. Murff, 18, of Norfolk, Va., grandson of Mr and Mrs. Eddie Harrell of Route 3, Hertford, has taken second place in the national Mr. Future Business Leader of America contest held in Miami Beach. The Norview High School graduate was chosen and sponsored by William T. High to represent Norview Future Business Leaders at the regional contest held at Old Dominion University. High said that Murff was president of his chapter during the last school year, and that the choice was based upon the student's ability and activity in school and community matters. The regional competition led to state competition. After winning that, Murff went on to the national competition in volving representatives of the 50 states. The judging was based upon local chapter, school, and community activites, and church involvement, and, at the state and national levels, a business examination that tested general business knowledge, punctuation, ab breviation, and mathematii computation. . , : Murff has been accepted Old Dominion university where he plans to major in accounting'.: Local BoyOn Life Saving Team Two children can credit hospital personnel's efficiency with saving their lives. An Inhalation Therapist aided in intubation and ; auxiliary respirations. Monitor :. equipment was connected by an -E.K.G. Technician and nurses were providing gastric suction and intravenous fluids. John Stallings Pharmacist, had the newest, anti-toxin agent established, the weight of the patients estimated, and the proper damage computed by the time the physicians were ready for it. This is the teamwork that ; can save a life. It undoubtedly ' did this time!
